Counting the uncountable
Resources available to conduct the activity
This learning situation sets real-world challenges to estimate crowds and cells through the use of dynamic simulators and collaborative spreadsheets. The aim is to develop statistical and critical thinking through statistical sampling techniques.
Recipients: 3rd ESO (any ESO year).
Duration:
2-3 class sessions (50-55 minutes per session). Research and analysis phase.
Objectives:
- To apply statistics in real-world crowd counting situations.
- Estimation by sampling and average behaviour.
- Results analysis.
Sustainable Development Goals:
The contents are of horizontal relevance in applying statistics to social and health problems (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, in counting cells, SDG 4: Quality Education, in fostering critical thought, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities, in managing safe crowd capacity).
Didactic content:
- Design of statistical studies.
- Locating and organising data.
- Estimation.
Key skills (Spanish Law LOMLOE):
- Skills in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM).
- Digital skills. (DS).
- Personal, social, and learning-to-learn skills. (PSLTLS).
Specific skills:
- CE1 (Interpreting problems).
- CE3 (Exploring conjectures).
- CE9 (Personal skills).
- CE10 (Social skills).
Basic knowledge:
- Design of statistical studies.
- Locating and organising data.
- Estimation by sampling.
Methodology: Paired or group work. Collective work. Analysis activity.
Resources needed: Chromebooks. Google spreadsheet. Projector or interactive monitor.
Relationship with other subjects:
- Technology and Digitalisation.
- Social Sciences.
- Biology.
